OTTAWA— The Liberal Party of Canada’s website will be darkened Monday, June 4th in solidarity with BLACKOUTSPEAKOUT, a campaign spearheaded by a group of organizations committed to highlighting the Harper Conservatives’ persistent assault on the environment and democracy, said Liberal Environment critic Dr. Kirsty Duncan today.

“Whether it’s by silencing scientists, threatening NGOs, firing or insulting independent watchdogs, using the Canada Revenue Agency as an attack dog or de-funding groups, anyone who disagrees with Stephen Harper is told to ‘sit down and shut up,’” said Dr. Duncan. “Silencing individuals, groups and charities simply because they do not share one’s views is not a democracy. Liberals will continue to speak out against these flagrant attacks by the Harper Conservatives.”

This campaign is a continuation of the work done by the Senate Liberal caucus, who have been on the frontlines of the government’s attacks on charities and NGOs, and recently moved a motion to hold Senate committee hearings on this issue.

“The Harper Conservatives have consistently used their majority to muzzle those whose opinions are critical of their agenda,” said Dr. Duncan. “On Monday, environmental groups will be speaking out against the abuse they’ve had to endure from this government, but all Canadians should be asking themselves ‘who’s next?’ Who will be under attack by this government for voicing their opposition?”
Background:

Liberal Senators have launched a petition to pressure the government to allow charities a forum in the Senate to defend their reputation. It can be viewed here.
