Utilizing Federal Lands for Affordable, Intergenerational Housing

WHEREAS the 2015 Election Liberal Platform promised to identify federal lands and buildings that can be repurposed into affordable housing in high-cost communities;

WHEREAS the new National Housing Strategy calls for $11.2 billion to build, renew, and repair Canada’s stock of affordable housing;

WHEREAS Budget 2017 invested $202 million over the next 11 years to make federal lands and buildings available to housing providers;

WHEREAS intergenerational housing has shown positive results in improving seniors’ health outcomes, building strong communities, and providing affordable housing solutions for participants of all ages;[1]

BE IT RESOLVED that the Liberal Party of Canada urge the Government of Canada to establish a proposal-based program which results in projects on federal lands that, in addition to meeting ongoing Government of Canada requirements, also increase  affordable housing, particularly in high-cost communities;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that priority be given to projects focused on building intergenerational communities that support positive outcomes for seniors and residents of all ages.
